In this science fiction drama, Aya became the greatest flyer the world of Slipface ever produced. Until a tragic accident rips off her wings, the population worships her. A genetic throwback, Stew has no wings on this human colony world where, for a thousand years, all native people could fly. Fate throws the pair together when Stew and his AI partner, Peng, accept the job of returning the deeply troubled and resentful Aya home after a hospital fails to restore her wings to their former glory.
A flawed man, forever shunned by society and sometimes cruelly persecuted, Stew’s heart never had a chance to grow. Aya has plummeted from the loftiest heights of stardom to the darkest levels of despair. Like her body, her heart was fractured beyond despair. She despises Stew as a reflection of what she has become.
Full of mutual resentment, they undertake a perilous journey across the bizarre, alien deserts of Slipface. Vast, violent storms roll across the land. Monsters live within gigantic sand dunes. Towns survive only under the protection of domes that Stew and Peng work at repairing.
The lethal desert is their relentless and implacable enemy. People in the domes regard them as freaks. But, the real enemy resides within themselves.
Their harrowing tangle of conflict and desire grows to a crescendo against the backdrop of a place where humankind was never meant to be. They discover that wings and bodies are merely window dressing for the soul.
